An open letter to the U.S. Secretary of State from the China Support Network; calls for diplomatic demarche to Communist China

Dear Secretary Rice,

Perhaps you look upon relations with Communist China as a tight rope or high wire, where one in your position must perform a balancing act. It may also be true, to extend the analogy, that you have wobbled during your act. That would explain why you and I have sometimes agreed and sometimes disagreed.

Two examples of where we disagree are the "Countries of Particular Concern" list, and the "worst human rights offenders" list. When you took Vietnam off of the former, I called for you to resign. When you took China off of the latter, I called for you to resign. I continue to feel strongly that those nations belong on those lists.

Conversely, we have been on the same page, as when you were pushing for the freedom of China's dissident, Yang Jianli. And of course I applaud any blandishments for freedom, democracy, and human rights. I run the China Support Network, formed by Americans in 1989 when everyone had the urge to respond to the bloody Tiananmen Square massacre -- the carnage and tragedy that befell China in that year.

Now I have a new matter for you, and this one calls for a diplomatic demarche to Communist China. There has been the sudden onset of "rent a mob"counter demonstrators, confronting and harrassing the peaceful protestors of the Chinese democracy movement and the Falun Gong spiritual movement. Infact, similar "rent a mobs" have been counter demonstrators for pro-Tibetan campaigners. I'm not sure about the Save Darfur coalition; they, too are against the Summer Olympic Games if they are held in Beijing given its current policies. While I can't speak for the latter campaigners, I am regularly found among Chinese dissidents and Falun Gong practitioners -- or just say, human rights campaigners.

In the United States of America, which advertises an environment of free expression, should we be tolerating overt interference, vandalism, and assault directed at human rights campaigners in their peaceful, lawful activities? --No! Very clearly, Communist China is testing its limits, because the recent actions against human rights campaigners have been coordinated and stage managed -- we believe from officials at Chinese Consulates.

Perhaps I can recount my own personal experience, due to my involvement with the human rights campaigners. The Human Rights Torch Relay, an alternative to the Olympic torch, began crossing the United States on March 30. I begana speaking tour at related rallies. The crowds were very supportive, and there were no hecklers, counter demonstrators, or opposition -- at first. Iwitnessed half a dozen rallies with warm receptions. On April 24 atPrinceton University was the first occasion with counter demonstrators. They were Princeton students and they were peaceful and orderly -- not overly disruptive. On April 26 at Yale University, Chinese students did a separate program of their own nearby, using another area of the New Haven Green for a
counter demonstration. There may have been tense moments as our parade passed by their area, and "the reds" aggressively crowded "the blues" to jeer the procession.

So far, I would say "no harm, no foul." America is a democratic environment and I support the right of "the other side" to be there (even while I disagree with "the reds"). Also on May 17, I was present at a rally in Flushing Queens of New York City. This was for the "Quit the CCP" campaign, a different effort than the Human Rights Torch Relay. The "blue" rally on our side of the street, of perhaps 50 people, was jeered by a crowd of about 400 "red" Chinese on the other side of the street. While this situation was tense, I thought that Flushing police did a great job of keeping the two sides apart. At least while I spoke, I witnessed no violence.

Jeering can be considered acceptable in a democracy -- if I could tell you, "no harm, no foul" then we wouldn't have this letter. Unfortunately, the "red" crowds have been crossing the line into the area of unacceptable interference, vandalism, and assault. Reports from the scene are that a 70-year-old retired engineer was beaten at that May 17 occasion. The Epoch Times reported, "Peaceful Rally Attacked in New York City's Chinatown." To my knowledge, the Falun Gong presence in Flushing, New York has been attacked repeatedly, each day since May 17. --And reports tell us that similar attacks have simultaneously occurred in Los Angeles and in Japan.

The Flushing police department and City Councilman John Liu can attest to escalation that has happened in recent days. At least two arrests have been made by Flushing police, and Councilman Liu appeared on the scene to lecture through a bullhorn. As expressed by the Falun Dafa Information Center (FDI), "Queens police arrested two men in connection with Tuesday’s assaults....

Both stand charged with assault, and may be prosecuted for a hate crime. The victims’ identity as Falun Gong members is believed to have been the crimes’ motive."

Peaceful human rights activists stand with materials such as their booth and their signs. Whether we speak of vandalism to those materials, or whether we speak of physical assaults and death threats to human rights campaigners, these actions serve to deprive the victims of their freedom of expression.

They should not be suffering a penalty in consequence of their use of political free speech. A line has been crossed, and these actions are Communist-organized (see below). Councilman Liu drew the line as he said, "This is a fundamental fact in the United States of America: that everybody
has a right to say what they want. There's freedom of speech. But nobody has a right to lay a physical hand on anybody else. Or to even touch their belongings including their own signs that they use to make their statements."

Hence, we and I call upon you, Secretary Rice, to make a diplomatic demarche with Communist China. Their consular officials -- in making trouble for human rights activists -- have crossed a line; have gone too far; and have exceeded the limits of what is acceptable conduct on our soil here in the United States of America. One of our volunteers under attack is a U.S. citizen and mother of two U.S. Marines who are serving the USA in Iraq. She was assaulted and received a death threat. Are we correctly pinning these actions upon the Chinese Communist Party? --You betcha! Think about the PR -- public relations situation. Would mainland Chinese media ever cover the rallies of human rights activists? Not usually. Usually, "the blues" are a verboten taboo in red China. --However, and not by accident, mainland Chinese media arrived at the scene of the
attack upon Saturday's rally. According to FDI, "One woman at the Flushing scene identified herself as a reporter sent from Changchun Television, a state-run media entity in northeastern China. A second individual, a male, identified himself as a Beijing journalist assigned to take photos."

As reported by the Epoch Times, "The attack on the rally seems to have been coordinated with Chinese-language media that are controlled or influenced by the CCP. These media outlets, such as CCTV, ordinarily do not cover rallies held to urge people to quit the CCP.

"On Saturday, these media outlets were present in force. Immediately after the event ended, they published and broadcast stories whose themes were that the participants in this rally 'do not care about the victims of the Sichuan earthquake' and 'do not love China.'" The Times also reported that "One of the attackers shouted in Chinese into his cell phone 'Hurry! Bring more
people over here. Each person will be paid 90 dollars.'" Hence the term "rent a mob."

To sophisticated Western eyes, the sequence of events is very telling. On the one hand, it is a new day when human rights campaigners get coverage from Mainland news media. But on the other hand, the press coverage amounted to hit pieces to tarnish and slander the human rights campaigners. I can say again that this does not happen by accident. Mainland media does not get dispatched to Flushing, NY unless the assignment is in accordance with wishes of the Chinese Communist Party. The regime has tipped its hand. These incidents are a calling card, and they are testing the United States.

A diplomatic demarche is the least you could do. We continue to call for a boycott of the Olympics and the removal of PNTR trade status from Communist China. Thank you for taking these concerns into consideration.

Organized Chinese Crowds Attack New York Human Rights Activists

Flushing, NY–A group of Chinese crowds, suspected to be organized by the Chinese Communist regime, attacked the service center for withdrawing from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in Flushing, NY and volunteers at the center on Monday morning, following a similar attack on Sunday and an attack on Saturday on participants at a rally celebrating the growing trend of withdrawals from the CCP on Sunday.

A group of 400 or more Chinese men and women suspected of being hired by the Chinese Communist regime, besieged the service center in Flushing. The Chinese Communist regime's official media surprisingly appeared on time at the scene of the attack.

Today the volunteers of the service center for withdrawing from the CCP arrived at the Flushing Public Library as usual. After they set up the table and displayed photographs and print materials of The Epoch Times' The Nine Commentaries on the Communist Party and reports of over 36 million people that have withdrawn from the CCP and its two affiliated student leagues, the volunteers began to distribute free newspapers and print materials to passersby.

Mr. Zhang Derong, a resident in Flushing and a Falun Gong practitioner, said, "This attack is similar to the one on Sunday. Tens of people quickly surrounded volunteers at the service center. They closed in and they meant trouble. Then they started a verbal attack. They pointed at our poster display and shouted very nasty things. The rest of the crowd cheered them on. Some shouted, 'Get out! Get out! Kick them out of the place!'"

Several with cameras and TV cameras moved about among the mob, shooting footage. A female reporter told someone at the crowd that she is from Changchun TV Station.

Another Flushing resident Ms. Wu Hua said, "This is apparently a plotted and organized attack. Several men surrounded the volunteers at the service center, shouting insults. They didn't come here to collect donations for the earthquake in China.

"They were attacking us in the same way the Chinese Communist Party suppresses Falun Gong practitioners in China. They insulted us and shouted profanity. Before the police arrived, the mob attacked two volunteer ladies. They wouldn't dare without someone backing them up."

Another resident in Flushing Ms. Shi Rongfeng recalled, "I tried to reason with some people peacefully, but a woman refused to listen. She kept cursing and started to attack. She had a menacing look. If somebody didn't stop her, she would have kept on attacking us."

Eventually about 400 people surrounded the service center volunteers. In order to protect the personal safety of about ten volunteers at the service center, including several elderly people, the police asked the volunteers to leave the scene. The police interviewed several witnesses to the attack and made a report for further investigation.

A similar attack also took place on Sunday. According to a witness, Monday's crowd was the same mob as the one on Sunday. In fact, a group of Chinese disrupted a public assembly celebrating the trend of withdrawals from the CCP on Saturday, leading many to suspect that the Chinese Communist regime might be the mastermind of this series of three attacks.

According to the Falun Dafa Information Center, Zhou Yongkang is suspected of organizing China's overseas student and scholar associations, as well as Chinese community associations and local thugs, to instigate overseas Chinese people's hatred against Falun Gong practitioners, to attack practitioners, and to obstruct practitioners' civil rights.

The Chinese Communist regime's official media seemed to possess an amazing foresight concerning the three attacks because they had their TV cameras set up before each of the three attacks and then broadcast the footage to the audience in China.

Following the earthquake in Sichuan, the Chinese Communist regime's media in China have repeatedly run reports against Falun Gong practitioners, accusing practitioners of refusing to donate to the earthquake relief. These reports effectively aided in the regime's hate propaganda against Falun Gong.

The people that led the mob attacks allegedly have criminal records in the U.S. Some of them are currently under investigation. Falun Gong practitioners are asking the U.S. authorities to release these Chinese agents' personal information and to deport them from the U.S.

MEMBERS of a peaceful Chinese spiritual movement say that more than 1,500 of its supporters have been detained in the run-up to the Olympic Games and that one of them, a popular folk singer, has died in custody.

The arrests have been carried out against Falun Gong, a group that practises traditional meditation and exercise. The Chinese government banned Falun Gong in 1999, calling it “an evil cult”.

The official media have not reported the arrests, but there has been lively discussion among music fans on Chinese websites over the fate of the singer Yu Zhou, 42. “F*** authority. Another beautiful soul has left the world,” commented one distraught fan.

Falun Gong representatives said Yu was arrested on January 26 while returning home from a concert in Beijing. His family were called to the Qinghe district emergency centre on February 6 to view his body, which was covered in a white sheet.

Yu’s relatives were told that he had died of diabetes or as the result of a hunger strike. They replied that he had never suffered from diabetes and refused official demands for an immediate cremation, the group said.

Yu won a following among young Chinese for his mellow folk ballads. His group, Xiao Juan and Residents from the Valley, released two successful CDs and appeared on the Phoenix television channel.

Yu was a graduate of Beijing University. He married Xu Na, 40, a poet and painter who was imprisoned between 2001 and 2006 for her association with Falun Gong. The group said she was also arrested on January 26 and remains in custody.

It was not possible to verify Falun Gong’s allegations. Officers at the Tongzhou district detention centre would not respond to telephone inquiries.

Friends and colleagues of Yu said they have lost contact with the parents of the couple, whose homes were said to be under police surveillance.

However, a member of Yu’s band, contacted by telephone, said in response to a question about his reported death: “It is not suitable to answer this question. As you know, if I answer it I will be in trouble.”

While global attention has focused on the uprising in Tibet, the renewed attack on Falun Gong shows that the state security apparatus is determined to crush any domestic opposition before the Beijing Games start in August.

“It is increasingly clear that much of the current wave of repression is occurring not in spite of the Olympics but actually because of the Olympics,” said Amnesty International, which has detailed numerous arrests and the harassment of Chinese civil rights activists.

Now operating from exile, Falun Gong said that at least 1,878 of its adherents had been arrested since January 1. The detainees included 156 people in Beijing. Of these, 26 were residents of the Chaoyang and Shunyi districts, which host Olympic venues.

Falun Gong was founded in 1992 by Li Hongzhi, a former government grain clerk who is said to have achieved enlightenment. At first it attracted little official attention. As it grew in numbers, however, the group clashed with the authorities and a ferocious crackdown was launched.

The US State Department estimates that at least 100,000 Falun Gong members have been imprisoned, locked up in psychiatric hospitals or sent to “reeducation” camps, where they are made to denounce Li.

The group itself says several thousand of its followers have died in prison as a result of torture and beatings.

Inhuman Torture in China dwarfs Tibetan crisis

With the Chinese regime’s roundup of Falun Gong practitioners in anticipation of the Beijing Olympics, the massacre in Lhasa, Tibet, and the clampdown on the media, the spotlight has been shining ever brighter on China’s horrendous human rights abuses.


The FLGHRWG wishes to announce that it has sent out millions of emails around the world to alert government officials, NGOs, human rights groups, and many individuals of the inhuman torture going on in China. In order to win the Olympics, China made a promise to improve human rights. Far from keeping its promise, the human rights violations have gotten worse - much worse.

The Tip of the Iceberg

The following torture cases of Falun Gong practitioners represent just the tip of the iceberg. They are typical of what tens of thousands have experienced, what hundreds of thousands face, and what millions fear if they dare to place their own belief above belief in the Chinese Communist Party.


Ms. Zhang Yulan: In 2000, at the Changchun Women’s Labor Camp Ms. Zhang was forced to do slave labor, often until midnight, and was beaten and shocked with electric batons. In 2003, just two years after the Communist regime promised to “improve human rights” in order to get the Olympics, Ms. Zhang’s father and brother were tortured to death for practicing Falun Gong. On November 28, 2007, the police arrested Ms. Zhang, and caused her to “disappear.” The authorities refuse to give her family any idea of her whereabouts, or even tell them whether she is still alive.


Ms. Zhao Zhongling: Ms. Zhao was arrested five times for practicing Falun Gong, and suffered injuries due to torture each time. One month after her arrest on March 23, 2007, the authorities reported she was in critical condition. However they refused to release her. They continued to use heavy shackles on her legs, kept her tied to bed and even sentenced her to three years of forced labor. Ms. Zhao was tortured to death less than a month and a half after her arrest. She was only 44. After her death, the local authorities forced her family to sign a statement acknowledging her guilt.


Mr. Liu Hongwei and Ms. Mu Ping: On May 13, 2003, Mr. Liu’s wife was tortured to death at Jilin Province Hezuizi Women’s Prison for practicing Falun Gong. To avoid capture and further persecution, Mr. Liu had to leave his daughter and wander about. Ms. Mu Ping’s husband was tortured to death on May 13, 2002. For practicing Falun Gong, she herself had been tortured at a labor camp for close to three years. After she was released, her son never left her side.


The two adults came together, formed a new family, found work and settled down. On October 24, 2006, the police arrested them again, ransacked their home, and froze the 70,000 Yuan in their bank account. Their children were left without care, one of their parents suffered a heart attack. Both of their elderly mothers are on the brink of mental collapse, and Mr. Liu and Ms. Mu are still in prison for their belief.


Ms. Wei Fengju: Ms. Wei was first arrested in 1999. She was jailed for speaking the truth about Falun Gong. She was forced to work 17 to 20 hours per day and was sometimes not allowed to sleep at all. The guards used electric batons to shock her on her chest and in her mouth, which disfigured her mouth. When she was detained in February 2007, the torture left her with abdominal pain and she could not eat. After her release, she could not recover and died on July 12, 2007. Before her death, she told others, “I won’t be able to recover because they injected some unknown drug into me.”


Mr. Li Hongfu: Mr. Li was repeatedly jailed and tortured for telling people the truth about Falun Gong. The torture included the tiger bench, electric shocks, nailing bamboo shoots under his fingernails and merciless daily beatings by convicted drug addicts. The brutality caused Mr. Li’s spleen to rupture and his chest to collapse. He vomited and had difficulty breathing. He weighed less than 40 kg, could no longer walk unaided, and was in constant excruciating pain. Mr. Li never recovered and died on December 8, 2006, at the age of 31.

Door-to-door Arrests repeat the Cultural Revolution all over again

The Falun Dafa Information Center (FDI) has been receiving regular reports from adherents and their families inside China of door-to-door searches and arrests. According to statistics compiled from these reports, there have been 1,878 arrests across 29 provinces, major cities, and autonomous regions since January 1 of this year. In Beijing alone, 156 arrests are known to have taken place.

Rewards for Identifying Falun Gong Adherents

In cities a reward system has been put in place offering 500-3,000 yuan (roughly AU$30-AU$330) for identifying Falun Gong adherents to the authorities. In Zibo city (Shandong province), for example, announcements were posted in neighborhood administration offices offering 2,000-3,000 yuan for information leading to the arrest of a Falun Gong adherent.

Beijing regime uses Olympics as incentives to increase human rights violations

Since 2001 various sources, including Reuters, ABC, Intelligence on Line and Amnesty have reported the Chinese communist regimes view of the Olympics as a further justification for increased violence against Falun Gong.

US State Dept‘s annual 2006 report stated Falun Gong Adherents constitute at least ½ of the detained in labor camps.

In 2006, U.N. Rapporteur on Torture Manfred Nowak reported that 66% of all victims of torture and ill treatment in China were Falun Gong practitioners. The report states: “The cruelty and brutality of these acts of torture defy description”.

According to Amnesty International, in preparing for the Games, Former Public Security Minister Zhou Yongkang issued the following order in the context of “successfully” holding the Beijing Olympic Games:

“We must strike hard at hostile forces at home and abroad, such as ethnic separatists, religious extremists, violentterrorists and … the Falun Gong.”

A Feb. 21, 2001, Reuters report revealed that the campaign against Falun Gong had escalated as China entered the final stages of bidding for the 2008 Olympics. The report cited the state-run Xinhua propaganda outlet as saying the government had given “citations” to 110 organizations and 271 individuals “for anti-Falun Gong work” and to “wipe out Falun Gong.”

A July 17, 2001, report from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, disclosed that after Beijing landed the 2008 Olympics, China’s then Vice Premier declared that winning the Olympics was “justification for the country’s crackdown on the Falun Gong.”

In 2005, an intelligence journal, Intelligence Online, revealed that China’s deputy public security minister, Liu Jing, had been assigned the responsibility of wiping out Falun Gong before the Games. (news)

“The International community had hoped that awarding the Olympics to China would spur an improvement in human rights,” said FDI representative Mr. Erping Zhang. “But the facts on the ground tell a very different story. The Olympics seem to have given the Beijing regime a new incentive, and excuse, to hasten its abuses of citizens’ rights. The arrests make a mockery of the regime’s promise to improve its dismal record on human rights.

It is now imperative that the international community speak up, leverage real pressure, and stop these deplorable actions.”

New York Times Aids Genocide for Chinese communist regime

A recent New York Times article which exaggerated and stated downright lies about a Chinese New Year show clearly reveals darker side of a media outlet that Americans have come to trust.

The New York article clearly tried to deceive New Yorkers while kowtowing to the Chinese communist regime in slandering the show and for what purpose?

Because the Divine Performing Arts has brought the truth and attention to the inhumane persecution of the Falun Gong practitioners in China thru the medium of Culture, dance and music. And the Chinese communist regime is very frightened of being exposed for this Genocide.

The world watches on as Steven Spielberg boycotts the Olympics for China’s involvement of Genocide in Darfur Tibet and Burma but what of the gross indecent inhumane genocide of the peaceful Falun Gong in China?

A recent New York Times article making unwarranted criticisms of a Chinese New Year show clearly reveals a darker side of a media outlet that Americans have come to trust.

The show in question is the Chinese New Year Splendor, which is performed by the Divine Performing Arts Company. After finishing last weekend a successful 11-day run at New York's famed Radio City Music Hall, the Divine Performing Arts is now continuing its worldwide tour.

The article bashes the show for a few acts in it related to Falun Gong, a spiritual practice persecuted by the Chinese communist regime.

Facing almost nine years of severe repression, including prison, slow death by torture, and state-sponsored exclusion, intimidation, and brainwashing, Falun Gong practitioners have never resorted to violence. Instead they have appealed to the world to help them have the opportunity to practice their spirituality in peace.

That the Divine Performing Arts would call attention to the struggle of the Falun Gong practitioners would usually be seen as commendable and might be considered a necessary part of any attempt to portray China's traditional culture. After all, the persecution of Falun Gong is only the latest chapter in the efforts of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to extinguish China's traditional beliefs.

In the view of Falun Gong adherents, the practice of Falun Gong offers hope for a China suffering today from the exaltation of the principle that getting rich is all that matters and the collapse of China's traditional moral teachings.

This view is shared by the human rights attorney (and Christian) Mr. Gao Zhisheng, as expressed in an open letter to CCP Chief Hu Jintao and regime President Wen Jiabao: "In contrast to the current situation where the humanity, conscience, morality, compassion, and responsibility of our society is suffering an overall deterioration, these cultivators, as a group reborn from the old nation, have impacted all of these areas in a positive way.

"One can feel the powerful way in which faith can change one's soul. Indeed it has allowed me to see a spark of hope for rescuing our nation from its current depraved state."

Ms. Carrie Hung, the spokesperson for the producer of the Splendor, New Tang Dynasty TV, says the Divine Performing Arts aims to discover and revive the best in China's authentic traditional culture.

According to Gao—and other observers of today's China, we in fact see Falun Gong reviving a traditional morality in China. Why shouldn't the Divine Performing Arts include acts about Falun Gong in their survey of the best in China's traditional culture?

Yet, the NY Times article criticizes the Divine Performing Arts' approach to raising global consciousness about the plight of Falun Gong. It does so even though most audience members will see in the acts portraying that persecution a reminder for all of the other persecutions carried about by the CCP—house Christians, Tibetans, Uigher Muslims, and many others.

The NY Times uses three audience interviews to portray the inclusion of material on Falun Gong as "political," and says, "At intermission, dozens of people, perhaps a few hundred, were leaving" the show.

This combination of quotes and observation suggests to the reader a widespread rejection of Falun Gong and the Splendor.

But Epoch Times reporters at the scene did not see "hundreds" leaving the show early.

Moreover, the NY Times fails to provide its readers with an essential bit of context for understanding the use of the word "political" by Chinese immigrants.

The CCP has always stigmatized as "political" those it considers its opponents and anyone who takes part in an activity the CCP does not control. The word "political" has been one of the foundation blocks of CCP propaganda.

For those suffering under the CCP's rule, the word "political" has this important function: It tells all Chinese they had better run in the opposite direction or risk their very lives.

Had the NY Times readers had a chance to understand the history of this word in China, then they might have seen the likely meaning behind the comments of those interviewed. They were not rejecting Falun Gong; they were simply scared of coming in contact with something the Party has told them to avoid.

Even after living for decades in New York, Chinese immigrants may struggle to shed the fear they learned in China—that fear is what once kept them alive.

But rather than provide readers with this necessary context, the NY Times instead manipulated appearances in order to draw readers to a false conclusion: that the audience as a whole was objecting to the Splendor.

The Epoch Times, a media sponsor of the show, conducted hundreds of interviews with audience members who had a very positive reaction. Only a minority of about one percent of interviewees had a negative reaction.

In a word, people loved it—the dancing, the music, the costumes, the backdrops—and many people specifically noted how much they appreciated the two dances that portray the persecution of Falun Gong. Those warmly praising the show included professionals from the arts world and financial sector executives. ( http://en.epochtimes.com/features/dpa2008/ ).

Journalism is a profession rooted in the high ideals of truth, accuracy, and verifiable fact. The Society of Professional Journalists, a national organization with thousands of members, lists a code of journalism ethics along these lines. The code says: Seek Truth and Report It, Minimize Harm, Act Independently and Be Accountable. By publishing this article, the NY Times has shown that it does not honor these aspirations.

Instead of following these basic ethics of journalism, the NY Times sought after a cooked-up angle in pursuit of a controversial topic. The result is half-truths and inaccuracies meant to cast doubt on the spiritual practice of Falun Gong and on the worth of the Divine Performing Arts.

The right and responsibility of the media to seek the truth and report it is a sacred trust between that media and its public. When that trust is so flagrantly broken, the public would be advised to find another source of news and information.

Falun Gong or Falun Dafa is a system of "mind and body cultivation" related to Buddhism and qigong introduced by Li Hongzhi to the public in 1992. Falun Dafa has five sets of meditation exercises (four standing and one sitting meditation) and moral requirements summarized as Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance. The teachings of Falun Dafa are articulated in the two main books of the practice, Falun Gong and Zhuan Falun. Teachings deal with issues such as "cultivation of virtue and character", "moral standards for different levels", and "salvation of all sentient beings", among others. The teachings have been variously described as spiritual, religious or metaphysical. Falun Gong has been the focus of international attention since July 20, 1999, when the Chinese Communist Party banned and cracked down on practitioners in mainland China. Governments, international human rights organizations, and scholars consider the persecution a human rights violation. Amnesty International believes that it is politically motivated and a restriction of fundamental freedoms.

Beijing Tells Press of Intent to Bar Millions of Falun Gong, Violate Olympic Charter

Beijing Olympic organizers have openly expressed a policy banning Falun Gong adherents from attending the 2008 summer Olympics, the Falun Dafa Information Center reported Wednesday. Beijing’s decision stands in stark violation to Articles 35 and 36 of China’s own Constitution, which promise freedom of association and religious belief, as well as the International Olympic Committee’s bylaws, which prohibit any form of discrimination—including that religious or political.

The Falun Dafa Information Center condemns Beijing’s decision, and calls upon the international community to pressure China’s communist officials to reverse the unlawful policy.

“The Olympics must not be turned into a theatre of intolerance, a celebration of communist machinations,” said Information Center spokesperson Mr. Erping Zhang. “We’re talking about tens of millions being barred from the Games simply for who they are. This amounts to a violation of the Olympic Charter on a scale nobody could have imagined.”

News of Beijing’s discriminatory plans was made public in a November 8 report from the Associated Press. The report indicates that Beijing’s new, allegedly-more-tolerant religious policies “do not apply to Falun Gong,” and instead only reassert “China’s determination to marginalize, persecute and eradicate the spiritual movement.”

Li Zhanjun, director of the Beijing Olympics media center, told AP that, “Falun Gong texts, Falun Gong activities in China are forbidden,” and that, “Foreigners who come to China must respect and abide by the laws of China.”

Beijing’s explanation is not satisfactory, however, in that the branding of Falun Gong as “illegal” was in contravention to the constitution of the People’s Republic of China, as well as numerous international rights accords and covenants of which the PRC is a signatory. Article 35 of China’s own constitution, for instance, claims that citizens “enjoy freedom of speech, of the press, of assembly, of association, of procession and of demonstration.”

Article 36 of likewise declares that citizens “enjoy freedom of religious belief,” and that, “No state organ, public organization or individual may compel citizens to believe in, or not to believe in, any religion; nor may they discriminate against citizens who believe in, or do not believe in, any religion.”

The Olympics should hardly occasion an exception to such policies, even if PRC authorities have flaunted them for decades. To the contrary, the IOC had indicated that the Games would compel China’s rulers to improve the nation’s abysmal human rights record. The Olympic Charter states clearly: “Any form of discrimination with regard to a country or a person on grounds of race, religion, politics, gender or otherwise is incompatible with belonging to the Olympic Movement.”

The IOC’s regulations thus protect against the marginalization of groups such as the Falun Gong, even if such discrimination is internally legislated; the branding of Falun Gong as “illegal” does not change the religious character, or rights, of the group, and only bespeaks of the willingness and disposition of China’s communist authorities to subordinate rule of law to political caprice.

“Beijing’s calling Falun Gong ‘illegal’ is a clumsy attempt to justify what is a program of institutionally-sanctioned violence and persecution. The fact remains: millions of peaceful, law-abiding citizens who aspire merely to better health and moral living are being brutalized and deprived of their rights by an authoritarian communist regime,” says the Information Center’s Zhang. “In all of the other 75, non-communist states around the world where Falun Gong is found it is freely, legally, and openly practiced. Only in communist China does it face relentless suppression.”

According to a 2005 report by the U.N. Special Rapporteur on Torture, 66% percent of reported victims of torture in China were Falun Gong adherents. In a 2006 report, the U.N. Special Rapporteur on Torture expressed concern over increasing reports of systemic repression against the Falun Gong saying, “reports of arrest, detention, ill treatment, torture, sexual violence, deaths, and unfair trial of members of so-called ‘heretical organizations,’ in particular Falun Gong practitioners, may reflect a deliberate and institutionalized policy of the authorities to target specific groups such as the Falun Gong.”

The Falun Dafa Information Center has verified details of over 63,000 instances of torture, with over 3,000 deaths in custody. The actual death toll is believed to be as high as 10,000 or more.

Beijing’s latest statement follows a series of warnings sounded by the Information Center. The Center anticipated such policies, and has sought international support in preventing their enactment.

In 2005, for instance, the Center received credible reports that PRC authorities were, in preparation for the Olympic Games and in contrast to their promise to improve human rights, stepping up measures to “stamp out” Falun Gong prior to summer 2008.

In May 2007, the Center reported on a secret directive from the Ministry of Public Security, provided to the Center by sources in China, that lists 43 categories of unwanteds who are to be investigated and barred from the 2008 Beijing Olympics. (news / document)

The Information Center is currently seeking statement from IOC officials on Beijing’s announcement, and seeks clarification of what measures will be used to ensure that policies of discrimination are not carried out, be it openly or covertly, by PRC authorities.

AS President HU emerges from a seemingly uneventful Congress we can now see a chain of events that are progressing towards eliminating leader mr death himself - jiang zemin from his seat of power once and for all . Higher Power Involved in Unprecedented Politburo Lawsuit

CHINA—Recently The Epoch Times reported that the Beijing Second Intermediate People's Court accepted a civilian's lawsuit against a current standing member of the regime's Political Bureau. This unprecedented lawsuit has gained great attention from the world.

One expert believes the lawsuit's acceptance involves higher level authorities beyond the Politics and Legal Committee and reveals the in-fighting and division inside the core political body.

Zhou Yongkang, former Public Security Minister and currently Party Chief for the Central Political and Legal Committee, was the head of the regime's law enforcement and justice system.

Tong Jingguo, a native from Shanghai, filed a case against Zhou that was registered on September 20 at the Beijing Second Intermediate People's Court. On October 16, the second day of the Chinese Communist Party's 17th National Congress, the Ministry of Public Securities sent Tong an official document setting forth the administrative proceedings.

Several analysts told The Epoch Times that this case is the key for current leader Hu Jintao to remove Zhou and crush former leader Jiang Zemin's power. It is also the preparation work for Hu to stand clear from Jiang's crimes and hold Zhou, Lo Gan, and Jiang responsible for their crimes in the persecution of Falun Gong.

High Level Authorities Back the Court

Hu Jia, a human right activist, said it is almost impossible to register a case like this in court and enter proceedings. "The Political and Legal Committee is the head of the evil force in China. Complaints from common people against high level officials will never be accepted and the plaintiffs are often punished. Zhou is the Party Chief of the Political and Legal Committee and former Minister of Public Security.

"According to the organizational setting, both the Directors of the People's Supreme Procurate and the Supreme Court report to Zhou. Zhou should have total power to control this case in any way he wants.

"Hence, there is either a power independent of and higher than the Political and Legal Committee that backs the decision of the court; another force pursuing judicial independence competing with the Political and Legal Committee; or a high level force using this case as a means to combat Zhou."

Strike Jiang by Combating Zhou

Dr. Li Tianxiao, who received his Ph.D. in politics from Columbia University, said that Hu's biggest threat comes from Jiang's faction. Jiang tried everything to hold on to the power because Hu will make him pay for his dues once he loses power within the party.

Li thinks Hu is attempting to combat Jiang from three aspects—higher level political struggle, local forces, and within the party system. "In higher level politics, Hu's biggest threat is Zhou, the Party Chief of the Political and Legal Committee who holds control over the police and armed police.

"Jiang worked hard to keep Zhou in that position and that is why Hu has taken on Zhou. Zhou is one of the culprits who suppresses Falun Gong and has terribly inadequate governing records in every political position he has held. Zhou's only supporter is Jiang. Hu taking on Zhou will gain support from within the party and further crush Jiang's people," said Li.

Li said this case was registered in late September directly targeting Zhou. Hu hit Jiang's regime right on its face expecting to stop Zhou from entering the standing committee of the Political Bureau. At the same time, by stopping the current Minister of Public Security from entering the Political Bureau and the Secretariat of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, Hu suppresses the Ministry of Public Security and hence weakens Zhou's influence.

Publicizing the Split in High Level Politics

Wu Fan, a political critic, said registering the complaint against Zhou is an apparent sign that Hu and Jiang's political battle has rolled into the public's eye. It means Hu is consciously trying to separate from Jiang and his crimes in suppressing Falun Gong and preparing for his next attack.

Preparing to Make Jiang Pay His Dues

According to Li, it is unprecedented that a court registered a case in which a common person sues a high level party official and the Ministry of Public Security was forced to issue an administrative proceeding. This case sets a precedent that any guilty official, even a high level official or a law enforcement party, can be sued. This is preparation work for Hu to later charge Jiang and his other followers for their crimes, and a powerful threat to Jiang.

"It's a sign Hu wants to utilize public opinion. In this case, both appellant and lawyer are from Shanghai. Hu's strategy is to capture Jiang in his own power camp, Shanghai. Hu has plotted three other similar cases (Zhou Zhengyi, Chen Liangyu, and Wang Weigong's cases) targeting Jiang and his son," said Li.

Li thinks Jiang Mianheng (Jiang's son) and Zhou Yongkang's cases will very possibly cause future conflicts between Hu and Jiang, which may become as extreme as mobilizing armed police.

A Tidal Wave of Corruption Lawsuits

Hu Jia considers this case meaningful regardless of the result. He thinks there will be tens of thousands of these types of cases emerging because people and history won't forgive the killers who trample on human rights. Wu Fan thinks politics in China will evolve faster and more shockingly, based on this recent series of events.

Falun Dafa Information Center Responds to Xinhua Attacks on Dalai Lama and Falun Gong and

Urges Media Not to Echo Groundless Statements from Xinhua “News Agency”

NEW YORK – Responding to an Oct. 9 Reuter’s article citing a Xinhua commentary about the Dalai Lama and Falun Gong, the Falun Dafa Information Center said Thursday that the purpose of such statements was to deflect attention from rights abuses. The Center called on foreign media to stop uncritically repeating Xinhua propaganda.

“Xinhua’s statements linking the Dalai Lama and Falun Gong with cults are a calculated effort to demonize peaceful, faith-based groups,” said Levi Browde, Executive Director of the Falun Dafa Information Center. “It is irresponsible of Reuters to unquestioningly report them, especially without indicating to readers that Xinhua is the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) mouthpiece.”

In 2005, Reporters Without Borders called Xinhua “the world’s biggest propaganda agency,” highlighting its subordination to the CCP and regular distortion of facts. (news)

“It is a well-documented pattern of the CCP’s to use Xinhua to incite hatred against religious minorities and draw attention away from the real news—that the Chinese regime continues to torture and kill Tibetan Buddhists and Falun Gong practitioners,” said Browde.

According to a 2006 report by the U.N. Special Rapporteur on Torture, 66 percent of reported victims of torture in custody were Falun Gong practitioners. To date, the deaths of 3,097 practitioners at the hands of the CCP have been confirmed by the Falun Dafa Information Center.

One of the most recent cases was that of Mr. Chen Jianzhong from Hunan Province who reportedly passed away on September 14. Chen died having never fully recovered from 16 months in Xinkaipu labor camp, where he was detained without trial simply for speaking to someone in an elevator about Falun Gong. While in custody, Chen was reportedly deprived of sleep, shocked with electric batons, and held in solitary confinement for over three months. He weighed only 80 lbs upon his release in February 2007

On February 13, 2007, Falun Dafa practitioner Mr. Chen Jianzhong was taken home in critical condition from the Changsha City Xinkaipu Forced Labor Camp in Hunan Province. Mr. Chen remained on the brink of death and finally passed away on September 14, 2007, at the age of 36.

Mr. Chen Jianzhong weighed only 80 pounds when he was taken home from the Xinkaipu Forced Labor Camp by his family.

Could this evil really be happening -Forced Organ harvesting from Falun Gong?

The same thing happened during the Nazi Holocaust last century. Two witnesses came forward with reports of the infamous Auschwitz. In 1944, Rudolph Vrba and Alfred Wetzler presented an eye witness account of the holocaust. Many did not believe the account was accurate and the report was suppressed.

During the next three years and additional 2.5 million Jews were massacred by the Nazis. The world said they were waiting for additional evidence.

This report by David Kilgour and David Matas has 33 points of evidence . They have everything except a body and that you will never find as the bodies of forced organ harvesting and executions are all cremated.

If they only had one strand of evidence then you could easily say well that does not prove anything,. But the report cited 33 evidences.

Also why would the Communist regime then say this is not true without investigating the 33 allegations themselves. I mean any decent government would have done that to prove their innocence. The CCp denied everything but then produced 2 new laws forbidding the sale of body parts with out consent ? Which proves they were doing it before right? And why 2 laws?

They will not allow Amnesty, Red Cross, The United Nations or any other credible independent investigators in to all labour camps , jails torture camps etc . And Why Not?

It sounds like a bad sci-fi movie but according to reliable investigations, this is what is happening right now in China.

My regular Wednesday morning guest on 98.5 Sonshine FM is Ross Clifford who is the Principal of Morling College in New South Wales and current President of the Baptist Union of Australia. Each week we chat about a range of issues relating to spirituality and belief.

Today we talked about the persecution of members of the religious movement, Falun Gong, and the accusation that members of the group are being used for a worldwide trade in body parts. There is also concern that members of the underground Christian church may be suffering from the same kind of human rights abuses.

Ross highlighted the work of Canadian MP, David Kilgour, who describes himself in his biography as a practising Christian. David is part of a wide ranging investigation into the human rights abuses in China. Together with David Matas he has published An Independent Investigation into Allegations of organ Harvesting of Falun gong practitioners in China.

So what are we to do with this information? How do we call for greater transperancy in the actions of those in power in China? How do we send a message to the Chinese Government that this is unacceptable? These were a couple of the issues Ross and I discussed this morning.
