Best Way to Respond to Chinese communist evil is to Make It Public

A big Wake Up Call to the WEST....

Has anyone noticed lately what the Chinese communist regime does every time they are found out? The ritual goes like this -Deny , lie, then pass some new law that never comes into effect, pass more laws that never come into effect and then lastly tells the international community to stay out of their internal affairs?

Yet the Chinese communist regime constantly sends intimidating and slanderous letters to our politicians, media, law makers and business groups to not attend any New Tang Dynasty TV, The Epoch Times or any Falun Gong related exhibitions and performances?

Is this not interfering in our nations democratic rights? The Chinese communist regime has broken its Foreign Affairs agreements with us and has broken our countries laws by having their embassies send out propaganda letters to incite hatred and fear and to intimidate .

The Foreign affairs department of each nation has strict rules that do not allow Foreign embassies and consulates to disseminate and incite hatred against any group of the nations populace. Why are these rules not being not being enforced?

Take it up with your elected member of the Government? Below is a shining example of what a few good men can do stop evil spreading .

Mainland Rights Activists Applaud U.S. Lawmaker's Exposure of Coercion and intimidation

Open Magazine (The Epoch Times)">
(Top Row, L–R) Former journalist Ma Xiaoming; Assemblyman Michael Benjamin; writer Chen Xi (Bottom Row, L–R) political commentator Hu Ping; Jin Zhong, editor-in-chief, Open Magazine (The Epoch Times)

The Epoch Times revealed that a New York Assemblyman made public a letter from the Chinese consulate that attempted to push the communist agenda on Broadway. Several mainland rights activists told The Epoch Times they are encouraged by the lawmaker's righteous act.

On December 19, U.S. Assemblyman Michael Benjamin made public a letter from the Chinese consulate . The letter pressured the lawmaker "not to support in any way the Holiday Wonders and the Chinese New Year Spectacular"—shows that are produced by NTDTV, an independent Chinese language television station that has faced repeated attacks by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

Jin Zhong, editor-in-chief of Hong Kong's Open Magazine told an Epoch Times reporter that he believed the lawmaker's act represents general public opinion in the U.S. and that the incident also indicated how the U.S. government now has a better understanding of the CCP's manipulative nature.

Best Way to Respond to Evil is to Make It Public

A former Shaanxi TV Station reporter, Ma Xiaoming, indicated that he admired the spirit of Mr. Benjamin, saying that it requires great courage and a righteous heart to make public the CCP's coercion. It represents the spirit of real western democracy.

Ma said, "Now, the CCP's autocracy and totalitarianism does not dare to do things openly, it can only secretly play tricks, and spread their unspeakable things."

Why does the CCP interfere with NTDTV's cultural activity? Ma indicated that it is because the show promotes kindness and righteousness, while the party culture of the CCP is an ideology of falsity, violence, and poison. These values are incompatible. Therefore, the CCP invariably uses a variety of unscrupulous means to suppress the truth. He believes that the CCP's interference will, in fact, have the effect of promoting the show.

Traditional Chinese Culture

Chen Xi, a freelancer from China's southwest Guizhou Province, said that the event once again revealed the CCP's rejection of civilized society. The incident is also highly embarrassing for the CCP.

Chen said, "Healthy things have no fear of being exposed to the sun, but unhealthy things are afraid of sunshine; ugly things also.

"NTDTV sponsored a show promoting traditional Chinese culture; it is a great event that is a source of pride to patriotic Chinese people. Only organizations with twisted values like the CCP would be hostile and afraid of it," he added.

Chen said that NTDTV's show is not only renowned overseas, but its impact has also spread into mainland China. A significant number of people managed to break through the internet blockade in Shanghai and saw the reports related to this exceptional occasion.

He said, "NTDTV's programs are abundant and lively. The show is gracious and touching. This is the real ground work in the spreading of true Chinese culture and art with its inner spirit."

The Whole World Should be Alarmed by the CCP's Sabotage

A renowned political commentator, Hu Ping, said that what the assemblyman has done is correct, that such matters need to be made public so that people realize the lengths to which the CCP will go to manipulate overseas governments. It demonstrates that the U.S. government is increasingly clear about the interference from the CCP.

He said that the CCP is not only carrying out its hegemony in politics and the military, but also invading the field of culture in an attempt to spread its autocratic culture to other countries. The CCP not only controls the mainland Chinese, but it makes use of the freedom in democratic countries to spread its poison in other societies.

Hu indicated that autocracy and democracy are irreconcilable opposites. This event provides a wakeup call to the West to be on guard against the coercion of the Chinese regime.

People all around the world in the late 80's were very surprised when the Berlin wall fell and communism disintegrated in Europe.

Many people ask who will take over when the Chinese communist regime falls? They seem to not know that the Ccp will fall because for many years many good people have been working hard to expose the sins of the evil Chinese communist party. Good People have not only lost their lives physically but their lives have become consumed to correct this evil that has fallen upon 1.3 billion Chinese people . In today's world thanks to the Internet we can hear and see the voices behind the imminent fall of the criminal Ccp.

Here is one groups story below and their plans to help the transition for the Chinese people once the Chinese communist party falls.

This is one of the many groups who are not afraid to do what is right , will not be silenced and are proud and strong to speak out to correct these crimes against all of humanity. History will remember you all and humanity will forever be grateful.

Future China Forum Invites Experts to Support Transitional Mainland Government

Future China Forum publicly announced on December 5, 2007 to establish a transitional Chinese government for the purpose of disintegrating the Chinese communist regime. The organization's preparation committee invited experts of various subjects as well as citizens around the world to build a transitional government together. Future China Forum's announcement reads as follows:

Since the establishment of the Future China Forum in July 2006, people around the world have repeatedly discussed the necessity and urgency for establishing a transitional mainland government for the purpose of disintegrating the Chinese communist regime. Many tangible operational plans have been proposed.

Before the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) 17th National People's Congress was held, some people still held false hope that the CCP might launch a political reform and play a role in China's future political arena. However, the 17th National People's Congress rejected all possibility for the reform and eliminated any remaining fantasies people held for the CCP.

Over the past year, China's politics, economics, finance, society, and army have deteriorated tremendously, and conflicts are increasing daily. The CCP was untruthful when it vowed to sustain a "harmonious society" in China. Its deception and suppression have caused extremely complicated conflicts in Chinese society.

The CCP continues to insist on its own things, ban freedom of speech and reinforce its control of the media and Internet. China's civil rights activists and dissidents, underground church members and Falun Gong practitioners are facing more cruel suppression and persecution than ever. Meanwhile, the Party's corrupted officials are becoming even fiercer in their looting and confiscation of land and property. In addition, price indexes in China continue to rise and inflation is out of control. Life for the majority of the people in China is becoming unsustainable and unbearable.

The people of China are disgusted with the Chinese communist regime and have voiced their request via Future China Forum to establish a transitional Chinese government as soon as possible. They urge Future China Forum to gather vitreous forces from around the world to realize the goal of disintegrating the CCP as soon as possible. Many of China's military personnel are also urgently requesting an establishment of a transitional mainland government. They want authorization from the transitional mainland government to start a mutiny at the opportune moment to overthrow the Party's tyrannous rule.

The founding group of Future China Forum published three documents in July 2006: China Forum's Declaration , Future China Forum's Letter to the Chinese People and Command Center of China's National Defense , and Military and Democracy's Letter to the Chinese People . The goal of the three documents are to end the Party's tyrannous rule as soon as possible, establish the transitional mainland government and create a path which leads to freedom, democracy and a constitution that is upheld.

In order to establish the transitional mainland government, Future China Forum has done a lot of preparation, developing logical theories, collecting public opinions and recruiting personnel. Today the current situation in China has provided the transitional mainland government with the required political and social conditions. It is apparent that now is a good time to establish a transitional mainland government.

The founding group of Future China Forum held two meetings in November 2007 and passed a resolution to establish the preparation committee for the transitional mainland government to satisfy the Chinese people and the reform faction within the Chinese communist regime.

People appointed to the preparation, commissioned by the Future China Forum founding group, are Chen Yangchao, as the spokesperson in Europe; Jia Jia, as spokesperson in Asia; Zhu Genzhai as spokesperson in the Pacific region; and Wu Fan, as the spokesperson in the United States. Other members include An Qi, Feng Haiguang, Jia Kuo, Yin Daibiao, a representative from the CCP army, Tang Boqiao and Yuang Hongbing.

In order to build the transitional mainland government on a broader foundation, the preparation committee invited elites from all walks of life to build the transitional government together. Everyone is welcome to join this great endeavor of life in any of the following ways:

1. Work with the transitional mainland government. Due to the current special circumstances, in order to prevent interference from the CCP, be responsible for the country and the Chinese people, and in following the suggestion of Jun Zhongsheng and Yin Daibiao, the representative from CCP's army, we ask that each person who wants to join us provide:

A) a resume B) a record from The Epoch Times web site for quitting the CCP (http://tuidang.epochtimes.com/), showing your withdrawal from the CCP and its affiliated organizations and a note taken when reading the Nine Commentaries C) an affidavit for joining the transitional mainland government. We will conduct the necessary safety checks.

Monitoring the Falun Gong Human Rights Crisis in China

Eight More Deaths in China Detailed
The Information Center has publicized the details of eight additional deaths of Falun Gong adherents in China, each the result of state persecution. The deaths (or murders), which were documented by Chinese sources in the month of November, bring the known death toll to 3,109, and suggest that officially sanctioned brutality continues, behind closed doors, unabated. The victims span five provinces and range in age from 26 to 70 years. Primary causes of death were torture, force-feeding, and the administration of toxic drugs.

European Parliament Passes Resolution on Beijing Olympics
According to a Dec. 13 Reuters report (link), the European Parliament has unanimously passed a resolution criticizing the European Union for its failure to pressure Chinese authorities for increased rights protection in advance of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The Parliament is furthermore taking its concerns directly to the International Olympic Committee, it is said, following China’s failure in “living up to pledges” made in its bid for the Games. Edward McMillan-Scott, a vice-president of the Parliament who has personally investigated Beijing’s persecution of the Falun Gong, declared in a statement that he “deplores China’s continued use of brutal repression of all dissidence.” The Parliament’s resolution calls on Chinese rulers to free jailed dissidents -- among whom the Falun Gong number highest -- and cease all censoring of the Internet, among other measures.

Amnesty International Accuses China of Reneging on Olympic Promises
In a related sign that pressure is mounting on Beijing, Amnesty International has accused Chinese leaders of violating promises to improve domestic human rights conditions before the arrival of the 2008 Olympics. Corroborating concerns raised here by the Falun Dafa Information Center previously, Amnesty expressed fear of “an increase in harassment, detentions, and… house arrest ahead of the Games,” according to a report in the Khaleej Times (link). The Times report quotes Chinese human rights lawyer Biao Teng, who currently holds a teaching post at Yale University, raising the possibility of “calling for a boycott if necessary.” Biao singles out the case of the Falun Gong’s persecution in conjunction with China’s lack of religious freedom.

Labor Camp Survivor Tells of Ordeal
“There were many times I asked myself, why I hadn’t died yet? Why hadn’t I gone insane?” Such was Jennifer Zeng’s misery while held captive, a prisoner of conscience in a Chinese labor camp, on account of her Falun Gong identity. Zeng recounted her harrowing ordeal last week, speaking with the Australian paper Maitland Mercury (link). “They tortured me very badly... they used electric batons to shock me until I lost consciousness, but the worst thing was sleep deprivation,” Zeng said. “The longest period for me was 15 days and 15 nights without sleep… I witnessed people suddenly become mad ... So many people were tortured to that kind of extent.” Zeng, who has chronicled her journey to freedom in Witnessing History: One Chinese Woman’s Fight for Freedom (Soho Press), was in Maitland as part of a Human Rights Torch Relay event that passed through the city.

Falun Gong Calligrapher Arrested for “Happiness”
Just how far have Beijing’s rights deprivations of the Falun Gong faithful gone? This week’s telltale sign comes in a bizarre form: punishment for holding a nondescript calligraphy exhibition. The exhibition, set in Qingdao city, Shandong province, took place Nov. 3–8, and featured the calligraphy of Liu Xitong. Thousands reportedly visited the exhibition according to Chinese sources at Clearwisdom.org (link), with one city official heralding the show as the city’s most successful ever. Perhaps it came as embarrassment then, when it was realized Liu practices Falun Gong. Just four days after the show, on Nov. 12, police arrested Liu and his wife, Aifang, and ransacked the couple’s home. Various valuables such as computers were confiscated by police along with works of calligraphy, such as one scroll entitled “Happiness.” Police claimed, ironically, that such works were about Falun Gong.

Falun Dafa for Christians

I came across this site from Ontario called the Religious and Tolerance organisation. I'd like to pass this essay onto the readers as it made pretty good perfect sense to me. This essay was written by a Christian and is called

"Falun Dafa is perfect for Christians and here’s why":

The Falun, which they call a "law wheel", or "a miniature galaxy of spiraling energy from God", corresponds directly to the western idea of a living holy spirit presence within you.
bulletThe Falun is given by a qualified spiritual teacher to a qualified student just as Christ gave "the spirit” it his disciples on Pentecost.
bulletThe Falun provides power for disciples just like the Holy Spirit does for Christians
bulletThe Falun provides healing for practitioners just like the Western concept of the Holy Spirit does
bulletThe Falun provides supernormal abilities just like the Holy Spirit provides "Gifts of the Spirit” to Christians.
bulletThe Falun especially provides something known as Buddha fruit, which is identical to the Fruits of the Spirit that Christians treasure: namely love joy, peace, patience, etc..
bulletThere is nothing that the Falun does not provide that the Holy Spirit does, and there is nothing that the Falun does provide that the Holy Spirit does not. They are identical except for some minor cultural difference and ,of course, their very different names.

Assuming the Bible verse is correct that states: "By their fruits ye shall know them” It looks like Christians have some unlikely friends from Asia! This is very unexpected! How could Taoism -a naturalist religion, and Buddhism - an enlightenment philosophy, possibly combine in the 21st century to produce a moving meditation so naturally aligned with 1st century Christianity? How, in God’s name could this be possible?

Well, if the Bible is correct in asserting that:

bulletThe Holy Spirit will lead us into all truth.
bulletThe Holy spirit is available to all God’s people,
bulletThe Tao is just another name for the Holy Spirit.
bulletAsians are God’s people just like Jews and Europeans, Blacks, and other cultures.
bulletAsian mystics have studied nature, spirituality, mysticism, surrendered and prayed to God for truth, etc.

Then it does seem possible that they could produce a valid enlightenment system based on the Holy Spirit that is actually helping millions to get closer to God and live a holy life, leading to real enlightenment.

I have read both Falun Dafa books now and practiced with the VCD. I am quite frankly amazed at the depth and profundity of the teaching . Based on my 20+ years of private Christian Education, and my minister father’s insights , I think Falun Dafa is not only thoroughly Christian, I also think Christians should practice it as a way to get more of the Holy Spirit and to gain more enlightenment. We have too much theology and ritual in Christendom and not enough enlightenment and supernatural power . Falun Dafa could be just what we need to lift us a little higher.

East to West—The Human Rights Torch Shines On

Speakers from the Burmese, Tibetan, Darfur and Christian Communities all spoke in unison about the persecution of Falun Gong must stop before the Olympic Games in 2008. Otherwise China will not be fit to host these games without bringing great shame and discredit to the spirit of Olympia.

Lionel Grant from Action for Darfur in Perth said "How can we hope for the Chinese communist regime to help stop Genocides in Darfur, Tibet, Burma or become a responsible nation to the international community if they themselves do not stop the horrific persecution of Falun Gong inside China first?

A global initiative, the Torch was conceived as a vehicle, not only to raise awareness about the extent of human rights abuses occurring under the present Chinese Communist regime, but also to increase pressure on Chinese authorities to stop persecuting people for their beliefs, most particularly practitioners of Falun Gong.

Falun Gong practitioners are considered to be the most severely persecuted group in China. According to the UN special rapporteur Manfred Nowak, two thirds of those tortured in Chinese labour camps are Falun Gong practitioners. And torture is widespread.

In a recent appeal to the International Olympic Committee, Amnesty International highlighted their concerns for anti-Olympic activists who have been held under brutal conditions in China for a range of activities – including drawing attention to the plight of hundreds of thousands of people who have been forcibly evicted from their houses to make way for the Olympics.

One man, Yang Chenlin, gathered a petition stating "We want Human Rights, not the Olympics" from thousands of Chinese farmers. He was arrested earlier this year and has suffered brutal torture for his efforts.

"Since his detention in July, he has had his arms and legs stretched and chained to the four corners of an iron bed on numerous occasions. He has then been left to eat, drink and defecate in that position. He is still in detention," Amnesty reported.

The Human Rights Torch Relay was launched in Athens in August this year and has since travelled through Europe, arriving in Sydney on October 27.

Since then, it has travelled through the major metropolitan and regional areas of Queensland and Victoria.

Last week, Human Rights Torch Relay events were held in Adelaide and regional areas of South Australia, in NSW at Wollongong and several Sydney suburbs, and the Western Australian capital of Perth.

Community members in Western Australia expressed the same level of concern as their eastern counterparts.

Members of the WA Legislative Council for the Greens, Giz Watson and Paul Llewellyn, both expressed their support for the Torch. Ms Watson said she had been invited to a State dinner to meet the Chinese president, but had declined specifically because of China's human rights record.

Ms Watson said she could not honour the leader of a regime that continues to have an "appalling record of human rights abuses".

Mr Llewellyn said awarding Beijing the Olympic Games undermined the Spirit of the Olympics and was in effect putting "economic expedience ahead of human rights".

Members of the Burmese, Tibetan, Darfurian and Christian Communities also spoke at the event.

Darius Smith from Christians for Chinese Human Rights said"

Sadly others will ask of other preceding generations and individuals why they did not take action against torture and violence and slavery and why they did not move to stop governments from implementing bad and evil laws.

Those individuals will have nothing to say but rather will hang their heads in shame and wonder at their own actions (or inactions) when it can be clearly seen from the Heavenly perspective that many tools of helping were often available to those individuals.

Members of the International Olympic Committee

Fax: +41-21-621-6216
jacques.rogge@ioc.olympic.org

Dear Mr. Rogge and members of the IOC:

On November 8, 2007, Li Zhanjun, News Director of the Beijing Olympics media center, responded to western criticism of religious restrictions previously announced by Beijing, saying that the Chinese Communist government would now allow athletes and tourists to bring religious objects for personal use during the Olympics. However, this policy will not apply to Falun Gong practitioners: "Falun Gong texts, Falun Gong activities in China are forbidden," and "Foreigners who come to China must respect and abide by the laws of China." (AP)

We are distressed at this policy which is in direct violation of article 5 of the Olympic Charter, which states that: "Any form of discrimination with regard to a country or a person on grounds of race, religion, politics, gender or otherwise is incompatible with belonging to the Olympic Movement."

As well, Article 36 of China’s own constitution declares that citizens "enjoy freedom of religious belief," and that, "No state organ, public organization or individual may compel citizens to believe in, or not to believe in, any religion; nor may they discriminate against citizens who believe in, or do not believe in, any religion."

The persecution of Chinese citizens who practise Falun Gong constitutes a violation of China’s constitution by the Beijing government. That persecution of Chinese citizens is well-known. However, the host country for the 2008 Olympic Games has now extended its discriminatory religious policies to the entire international community through these recent declarations. Beijing, as host country, is saying that while participating foreign athletes who are Christians will be allowed to bring Bibles into the Olympic Village and to practise their faith while residing there, foreign athletes who are Falun Gong practitioners will not be allowed to bring Falun Gong materials or to practise their Falun Gong exercises. In fact, foreign athletes who are adherents of Falun Gong may not be allowed to participate in the Games at all.

This is eerily reminiscent of the situation which obtained before and during the Nazi Olympics of 1936 in Berlin. Within Germany, Hitler barred Jewish citizens from competing for places on the German Olympic team. Unlike his contemporary counterparts in Beijing with respect to Falun Gong, Hitler did not go so far as to impose restrictions on Jewish competitors from other countries. Nevertheless, his discriminatory racial and religious policies within Germany itself provoked a widespread call in the United States for a boycott of the Nazi Olympics, and many Jewish athletes refused to participate.

Not only does this latest order further demonstrate the Chinese regime’s unwillingness to fulfil its 2001 promise to the IOC to improve human rights in China, but it is also clear proof that any hope of improving Chinese human rights through the Olympics is futile because of Beijing’s total and demonstrable insincerity.

You may recall that in April 2007, Beijing’s Ministry of Public Service issued a blacklist barring “antagonistic elements” from attending the Games, including adherents of Falun Gong, “religious infiltrators” and others. Although this was a clear violation of the Olympic Charter, we are unaware of any declaration by the International Olympic Committee that it will enforce that Charter or that the IOC is at all concerned about the fact that Beijing has trampled upon the Charter.

Li Zhanjun's response clearly demonstrates that the Chinese government's policy of persecuting Falun Gong and its practitioners continues unabated. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has overtly extended the regime's persecution of Falun Gong to the Olympics—a most noble institution that is respected worldwide. Such abuse and discrimination against the followers of a peaceful spiritual teaching not only trash the Olympic Spirit, but also constitute a spurning of fundamental morality and ethics in the international society.

Having called upon the world not to politicize the Olympics, Beijing’s leaders have persistently, continuously, and consistently turned their hosting of the Games into a totally political propaganda extravaganza designed to glorify, whitewash, and strengthen their single-party dictatorship. They have from the outset exploited the opportunity afforded them by the IOC in precisely the same way as Goebbels and Hitler before them.

Therefore, we call on the IOC to:

Ø Require Beijing to rescind its policy of barring Falun Gong from the Olympics, which constitutes a severe breach of the Olympic Charter;

Ø Reconsider the eligibility of the Communist regime to stage the Olympic Games, given the steadily worsening human rights situation in China today;

Ø Discuss the possibility of holding the Olympics in another nation.

We also urge the international community and athletes from around the world to condemn Beijing’s trashing of the Olympic spirit and its scorn for the Olympic Charter.

The whole world is about to learn what religious repression “made in China” means. Beijing's characterization of Falun Gong as “illegal” is a clumsy attempt to justify a pogrom of government sanctioned violence and persecution. There is no basis in the Chinese Constitution or in any other Chinese law for Beijing’s claim that Falun Gong is illegal in China. It is “illegal” only because the top leadership declared it to be “illegal”, and no Chinese court has the authority to interpret the Constitution and overturn the fiats of the top leaders. No judicial process was ever involved in rendering Falun Gong “illegal”.

It is clear that the Chinese regime must stop using the Olympics as a cover for launching a crackdown on peaceful people of faith both in China and abroad and to halt the persecution of Falun Gong and all Chinese citizens.

Hence, we, the undersigned, believe that the IOC has the moral obligation to bring the true Olympic spirit to the Chinese people as set forth in the Olympic Charter. It’s not too late for the IOC to renegotiate the location of the Olympics and bring some well-deserved sobriety and human dignity into this situation for the sake of the Chinese people and our proud athletes.

Previous Olympics devolved into propaganda bonanzas for dictatorial hosts, such as the Nazis in 1936 and the Soviets in 1980, rather than promoting the universal celebration of peaceful competition and sport for people of all colours and creeds in accordance with the Olympic ideal. Beijing cannot possibly expect to freely continue with rampant political oppression, mass executions, forced abortions, illicit organ harvesting, religious persecution, and a slew of other human rights abuses, while attempting to present a civilized face to the world as host of the Summer Games in 2008.

Sincerely,

Covering up slaughter, with a little help from the CBC

Turkey denies the Armenian genocide. Sudan pretends the ongoing genocide in Darfur is not happening. The Soviet Union maintained that there was no forced famine in Ukraine. Neo-Nazis claim the Holocaust never happened. The pattern is predictable. Genocide Watch has identified eight stages of genocide. The last is denial.

The massive crimes that China has inflicted on the Falun Gong spiritual group follow this pattern. David Kilgour and I have written a report titled Bloody Harvest in which we showed that China has been killing the Falun Gong by the tens of thousands since 2000 for their organs. The organs are sold for huge sums, mostly to foreign tourists, for transplants. Beijing denies it all.

Bloody Harvest has been supported by two independent researchers -- Kirk Allison at the University of Minnesota and U.K. transplant surgeon Tom Treasure. All the evidence on which we relied is independently verifiable and available on our Web site, organharvestinvestigation.net.

Since the first version of our report came out in July, 2006, David Kilgour and I have been to over 40 countries publicizing its results. No one anywhere has refuted our report.

The Chinese government and its fellow travellers have responded with disinformation, denials and clumsy attempts at censorship. Beijing systematically tries to get our events cancelled. If that fails, it seeks to introduce its own propaganda into every forum to which we are invited.

When the CBC announced that it was broadcasting a TV documentary about China's persecution of the Falun Gong that featured our report, it was predictable that the Chinese censorship machine would get into gear. What was not predictable was that the CBC would pay attention to it.

Beijing leaned on the CBC and the network pulled the originally scheduled Nov. 6 broadcast. It was replaced with an old documentary on Pakistan because, so the CBC spokesman said, recent turmoil in Pakistan made the rebroadcast timely.

But timeliness was not the concern. The CBC went back to the documentary's producer, Peter Rowe, and asked for changes. The changes he made weren't enough. So the CBC made more changes on its own.

The CBC version of the documentary was broadcast on Nov. 20. Since the original version is now available on YouTube, it is possible to compare the two.

The CBC's deletions were telling. One expunged segment was the playing of tapes of telephone admissions from hospitals in China acknowledging that they were selling Falun Gong organs. (Chinese government denials remained in the CBC version.)

The additions were typical Chinese propaganda. The CBC on its own, for instance, added this screen to the documentary: "Amnesty International does not have conclusive evidence to back up the allegation the Falun Gong are killed for their organs." (It should be obvious that Amnesty's silence is not evidence of anything. The organization does not claim to be an encyclopedia of all human rights violations.)

The CBC claimed that the changes it made strengthened the documentary. But that is not what happened. Instead, the CBC has weakened itself.

"Beyond the Red Wall"

Falun Gong or Falun Dafa is a system of "mind and body cultivation" related to Buddhism and qigong introduced by Li Hongzhi to the public in 1992. Falun Dafa has five sets of meditation exercises (four standing and one sitting meditation) and moral requirements summarized as Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance. The teachings of Falun Dafa are articulated in the two main books of the practice, Falun Gong and Zhuan Falun. Teachings deal with issues such as "cultivation of virtue and character", "moral standards for different levels", and "salvation of all sentient beings", among others. The teachings have been variously described as spiritual, religious or metaphysical. Falun Gong has been the focus of international attention since July 20, 1999, when the Chinese Communist Party banned and cracked down on practitioners in mainland China. Governments, international human rights organizations, and scholars consider the persecution a human rights violation. Amnesty International believes that it is politically motivated and a restriction of fundamental freedoms.
